How to Fix The HP Reverb G2 X570 Setup Fail

CURRENT ISSUE

New G2 owners with an X570 motherboard and possibly new AMD CPU’s are having problems getting the G2 to initialize on setup.

What Seems To Work

  • Initializing the G2 on an Intel-Based PC
Then reinstall in on the X570 Rig.
  • Deleting the G2 from the Device Manager
Delete the G2 from within Device Manager.
Unplug the G2 from your Rig and restart.
Once started and signed in – plug the G2 back into the Rig.
(note: you may need to try several USB ports to get activation.)
  • USB-C to GPU
Plug the USB-C Reverb G2 connector into a GPU USB-C Port.
    (Rather than the MB one.)
  • Use the USB-C to USB-A Converter
Plug into a USB A port.
  • Is It Plugged In???
Check and be sure the cable connector on the HMD has “Clicked” when you plugged it in!
    • Ya – common…

This is update to my past comment. We don’t need to try any of these anymore. If you have troubles with your Reverb G2, contact HP support via chat and ask HP to ship the following : Part Number: M52188-001 Part Description: SPS-CA ACTIVE 6M BLACK /W SWITCH.

It is free and it is the “Revision 2” cable for the Reverb. Just tried it, works fine in all USB ports ! No need of the PCI-E USB card anymore !

I tried everything I could find online to fix this x570 issue (I have a MSI x570 Carbon Pro). Only a 30$ PCIe >=3.0 USB-C expansion card did the trick. Apparently, the x570 USB-C port can only provide 7 watts of power and it seems the Reverb G2 requires more from the USB port. The PCIe card I bought is able to provide 15 watts.
